Service Description

This course is suitable for everyone, whether you’re a beginner that has never touched clay and are just looking to explore the basics, or you’re pretty confident and looking for a bit more directed guidance towards refining your process. Week 1: Introduction to Wheel Throwing Participants will be introduced to the potter’s wheel and basic throwing techniques. You will learn how to centre clay, open the form, pull walls, and create simple shapes such as cylinders and bowls. Week 2: Introduction to Turning This week you will refine your thrown forms from the previous week by learning the turning technique. Practice trimming excess clay from the bottoms of pots to create even bases. Instruction will cover tool selection, proper tool usage, and achieving desired thickness and proportions. Week 3-4: Advanced Techniques: Measurement, Lids, and Handles During these two weeks, participants will advance their skills by learning to measure clay accurately for consistent vessel sizes. You will also explore techniques for creating and fitting lids onto pots, as well as attaching handles securely. Week 5-8: Self-Directed Projects with Support In these four weeks, participants will have the opportunity to work on self-directed projects while receiving guidance and support from the instructor. Students will have the freedom to experiment with the throwing process and apply the techniques they've learned. The instructor will be available for assistance and problem solving. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on safety practices, proper equipment usage, and studio etiquette. By the end of the 8-week course, students will have developed a strong foundation in pottery making. Your favourite pieces from this course will be fired and glazed for you to take home and enjoy. You will be notified by email when your work is ready to collect. Please feel free to drop by the studio over the weekends between 10am-6pm to collect your work, after you have received your email confirmation. Our studio is located in Unit 2C within the Deemouth Artist Studios courtyard. There is limited parking available at the studio on a first-come-first-serve basis.
