Studio Technician - Part Time (16 hours per week)

Aberdeen Ceramics Studio (ACS) is looking to recruit a skilled individual to lead on the day to day runnings of the ceramics workshop.

Aberdeen Ceramics Studio is a community-focused clay studio based in Torry, Aberdeen. Our mission is to make ceramics accessible to everyone by providing high-quality facilities, classes, and open-access studio space for makers of all levels. We foster a supportive environment that encourages creativity, learning, and collaboration, offering opportunities for personal development, skill sharing, and community connection through clay.

Weekly Hours

16 hours per week, to include 2 weekends (Saturday and Sunday) per month. 

​

Length of Contract

Permanent, subject to a 6-month probationary period. 

​

Place of Work

Aberdeen Ceramics Studio, Torry, Aberdeen.

Salary and Holiday

• £15 per hour, paid monthly.

• Paid holiday entitlement (pro-rata, equivalent to 5.6 weeks per year for part-time staff).

• Unlimited studio membership, including access to equipment, storage space, and firings.

• Opportunities to participate in ACS studio markets and sell work through the studio shop.

Jobs, Duties and Responsibilities 

The Studio Technician will play a key role in the day-to-day running of Aberdeen Ceramics Studio, ensuring smooth technical operations and supporting members, students and staff. 

​

• Loading, unloading, and monitoring kilns, ensuring safe and effective firings.

• Glazing of class work.

• Clay reclaiming and recycling processes.

• General studio cleaning and maintenance. 

• Assisting members with technical questions and studio needs during open access hours (particularly on the weekends).

• Supporting customers collecting finished class work.

• Monitoring materials use and reporting any supply needs.

• Following and upholding studio health & safety policies and procedures.

• Attending regular ACS team meetings.

• Other tasks as reasonably required to support the smooth running of the studio.

• Monitoring and contributing to communications used by ACS - our members community Whatsapp and social media account.

Person Specification 

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:​

​

Essential 

• At least 2 years’ experience working with clay (through personal practice, formal study, or community studio work).

• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.

• Good knowledge of ceramics studio practices (e.g. clay preparation, glazing, tool use).

• Friendly and approachable attitude with excellent communication skills.

• Enthusiasm for ceramics and a willingness to support others in their creative development.

Desirable

• Experience of kiln loading and firing processes (training will be provided if needed).

• Prior experience working in a community studio, workshop, or educational setting.

• Knowledge of health & safety practices in a ceramics studio.

• Interest in developing personal ceramics practice alongside community engagement.
