Whether you're a beginner eager to explore the world of ceramics or an experienced potter seeking to enhance your skills, this course is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience allowing you to make your own pottery. Week 1: Introduction to Pottery Wheel Techniques In the first week, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of pottery and the pottery wheel. You'll learn the basics of preparing clay, centering it on the wheel, and forming basic shapes. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on practice, you'll gain confidence and develop a strong foundation for wheel throwing. Week 2: Exploring Advanced Pottery Wheel Techniques Building upon the skills acquired in the previous week, the second week delves into more advanced pottery wheel techniques. Students will learn to create taller forms, experiment with different shapes, and explore decorative elements such as handles and spouts. Special emphasis will be placed on developing a sense of proportion and symmetry in your designs. Week 3: Refining Your Pottery In week three, the focus shifts to refining your pottery. You'll learn various techniques to trim and carve your pots, giving them a polished and professional finish. Additionally, you'll explore surface treatments such as glazing and decorating, understanding how to choose the right glazes and applying them effectively to enhance the beauty of your creations. Week 4: Function Meets Artistry The final week of the course will bring together all the skills you've acquired as you embark on creating functional pieces of pottery. You'll work on designing and executing practical items such as mugs, bowls, and vases while incorporating the techniques and aesthetics you've learned. This week will emphasise the marriage of functionality and artistic expression, allowing you to produce unique and beautiful pieces. By the end of the four-week pottery course, students will have gained proficiency in using the pottery wheel and refining their pots. You will have a deep understanding of wheel throwing techniques, the ability to create well-proportioned and symmetrical forms, and the knowledge to trim, carve, glaze, and decorate your pottery. Each student will have a collection of functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces to take home and showcase their newfound skills.
